Theory of Evolution

This morning at breakfast I'm eating my Raisin Bran and notice Claire watching me. I'm slightly suspicious of this but continue eating. Claire continues to watch me and then asks, "So is that why your mouth is big?"

Is that why, what, huh??? I'm wondering if I look grotesque or something as I shovel in spoonfuls of cereal.

"What do you mean?" I ask.

Claire responds, "Does your mouth get bigger as you get older so you can eat bigger bites which means moms and dads can eat faster because your kids are always saying "get me this, or I need that" and you always have to leave the table, so you can still get a lot of food even if you're so busy?"

It was my turn to stare.

I didn't know if to be impressed by putting such a logical explanation behind the theory of growing mouths, to laugh because it was also funny, or if to hug her for noticing that I am always having to get up and down regardless of how prepared I think the table is. (Remember that movie with the leg lamp in it? Remember the dinner scene? It's truth for moms, that's for sure.)

I smiled at Claire and said, "You know, I always thought our mouths got bigger because we just got bigger, but perhaps they get bigger for the reason you said. "

Claire just nodded and said, "It makes sense."

And as a busy dinner mom, I have to agree.

Rebecca, I think this is very funny . . . she is so observant! Sometimes I think you should trick Claire, by saying, "YES! That's why Mom's mouths are so big!" and see what she says. I wonder what she'd do. As for constantly getting up from the table at mealtime -- after a point, I finally give up and either we do without what is wanted/needed, or someone else has to get up and get it. I also think that this is why I get so skinny after I finally quit nursing -- my body isn't DEMANDING more food to make milk, (therefore forcing me to eat before I feel like I"m going to die) and since I rarely get a chance to sit down and eat myself, (or not until MUCH LATER or only part of my meal) I tend to shed weight even more after I wean my babies. That's one working theory anyway.

Catherine-

Love the theory. Wish I had responded like you suggested, it would have been more fun. I'll have to do that next time and you know with Claire there will be a next time. She is observant.

BTW, what did you think of Breaking Dawn?
