out of the mouth of babes

the other day jeremiah was doing something he normally wants my help for. i came to offer my assistance and he said, "i don't need your help. you go wash the dishes." a quick "excuse me?" came out of my mouth, followed by, "you're telling me to go wash the dishes?" and without hesitation he responded, "yes, that's you're job."

i could only laugh. what was truly funny is that in our house it is daddy who usually does the dishes. so i was a bit surprised jeremiah picked dishes as his choice of jobs. now if he had said "go do the laundry" it would have just been sad.

later as i was pondering on how i could possibly be raising an 18th century boy in a 21st century world it dawned on me that i was dealing with a 3 year old. in his 3 year old mind he sees his parents doing their "jobs". he wouldn't have told me to "go" to work because it's not something i do. so he picked something he has seen me do (on occasion) and sent me away to do mommy stuff why he tried to take care of jeremiah stuff. at least that's what i'm hoping anyway....

and just to prove that 5 year olds are capable of hilarious comments as well, here's something that had me in stitches. i went to pick claire up from school and claire's bus driver and i were conversing through our windows. one of claire's classmates got on the bus and shouted, "hi mrs. t!" (i have no idea why she calls me mrs. t)

anyway, i shouted hi back and told her we would call her mom soon so the girls could get together to play. she then asked claire, "did you come to my birthday party?" "no," said claire. "ok, well you can just bring me a present when you come to my house to play." mrs. winston and i busted up laughing. it took me a few minutes to compose myself, especially because claire looked absolutely bewildered about how to respond.

maybe i'll try that on my next birthday. i'll post my blog announcing my birthday followed by the polite statement that if you forgot it, you could just send me my present in the mail. cash preferred.
